Bartow takes much pleasure in being “just slightly behind the times,” states the The News and The Farmer/The Jefferson Reporter, and will celebrate its heritage on October 28 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. with the 15th annual Speir’s Turnout Festival. Activities will be centered around Bartow’s historical depot, the town’s most beloved landmark. Known as “Old Number 11, Central of Georgia,” it was for a number of years the only railroad station in Jefferson County, the point from which most of the commercial activity of the county radiated. James Spier granted the right of way through his land for the rail line and side track, where trains could turn out to allow another train to pass, thereby giving Bartow its original name of Spier’s Turnout. Many vendors have already reserved their booths, which will fill Heritage Park and surround the main street of Bartow and its historical depot. To inquire about booth space, contact Mary Sue Rachels at (478) 252-5596 or email marysuerachels@bellsouth.net. Arts and crafts, a variety of food, a noon parade, children’s area and free entertainment will provide festival-goers a day to remember. Patrons are invited to bring a chair, camera, children and grandchildren, spend the day in Bartow on Oct.28 and make their own memories at the 15th annual Speir’s Turnout Festival! |
